Chapters are more than a table of contents. Each one is a segment with its own permalink, topics and searchable text, so readers can find every moment where any narrator discusses a subject, in the style of the Densho archive.

Only segments of published interviews on the current site are listed. An Oral Histories link type is available in the site's navigation settings.
Segment search
Search matches chapter titles, topic labels and the chapter's own slice of the transcript. "Pearl Harbor" finds every clip in which anyone discusses it, and each result opens the segment page with playback starting at the chapter.
Topics
Topics are suggested by the model when an interview is segmented. The prompt is given the site's existing topic vocabulary, so new interviews reuse established tags rather than inventing near-duplicates. Staff can edit the topics of any chapter on the review screen; new labels create new topics.
When an item carries several interviews, topic pages append the media title to each group heading so narrators are not confused.
