Getting Started Omeka Classic plugin

Installation

Requirements

  • Omeka Classic 3.1 or later. MCP Server is built and tested on 3.2.2.
  • PHP 8.1 or later, with the curl extension.
  • Optional: Simple Pages for the page tools, Exhibit Builder for the exhibit tools. Block Suite's exhibit layouts are described and used like Exhibit Builder's own.
  • For the Claude and ChatGPT apps: the site must be reachable over HTTPS from the internet. Claude Code and Codex also work with sites only you can reach.

Installing

  1. Unzip McpServer-1.0.0.zip and copy the McpServer folder into your Omeka Classic plugins/ folder.
  2. Log in to the admin as a Super User and go to Settings > Plugins.
  3. Click Install next to MCP Server.

The MCP endpoint is then https://your-site/mcp. MCP Connections appears in the admin menu for every user: it shows how to connect each assistant, with this address filled in. The plugin's settings are under Plugins > MCP Server > Configure (see Configuration).

The Authorization header

Assistants send their credentials in the HTTP Authorization header. Some web servers, Apache with PHP-FPM in particular, drop it before it reaches PHP, and then nothing can sign in. Click Check on the MCP Connections page to find out. If the header does not arrive, add this line after RewriteEngine on in Omeka's .htaccess:

RewriteRule .* - [E=HTTP_AUTHORIZATION:%{HTTP:Authorization}]

(or CGIPassAuth On, where the server allows it). Nginx passes the header through without changes.

Upgrading

Deactivate the plugin, replace the plugins/McpServer folder with the new version, then click Upgrade (or Activate) on the Plugins page.

Uninstalling

Click Uninstall on the Plugins page, then delete the folder. This removes the plugin's settings, connected apps, tokens and upload addresses. Records the assistants created or changed are not touched.
