First version for Omeka Classic, the counterpart of MCP Server 1.1 for Omeka S.
- The endpoint
/mcp(Streamable HTTP, stateless): the 2026-07-28 protocol and the 2025initializehandshake from one address. Every request runs as an Omeka user, so Omeka's permissions, record ownership and plugins' hooks apply. - Signing in: an OAuth 2.1 server for the Claude and ChatGPT apps, Claude Code and Codex, with discovery documents, Client ID Metadata Documents and dynamic registration, PKCE, refresh token rotation, and a consent page in the admin where the user chooses read-only or edit access. Or an Omeka API key as a bearer token, or in the address for servers that drop the Authorization header.
- MCP Connections in the admin: how to connect each assistant with the site's address filled in, a check that the Authorization header reaches Omeka, and the apps users connected, to disconnect them.
- 26 tools (29 with deleting on):
omeka_info;search_elementsandget_item_typefor Classic's element sets and item types;search_resources(keywords, field conditions, collection, item type, tags, dates) andget_resource(with the image);create_items,create_collection,update_resources(set, add, remove or clear values, visibility, featured, collection, item type, tags, alt text, dry run),add_filesandrequest_upload;get_site,update_site,update_navigation,list_themes,get_theme_settings,update_theme_settings(checked against the theme's own form, dry run) andrequest_theme_upload; simple pages (get_page,create_page,update_page); exhibits and their pages built from blocks (get_exhibit,create_exhibit,update_exhibit,create_exhibit_page,update_exhibit_page), withdescribe_block_layoutsreading each layout's options from its form, Block Suite's included; and, when allowed,delete_resources,delete_pageanddelete_exhibit_page. - Metadata is keyed by "Element Set:Element" ("Dublin Core:Title"), with dcterms terms for Dublin Core and bare names when unambiguous; unknown fields get suggestions, and Item Type Metadata fields are checked against the item type. Every problem is reported at once.
- Settings: OAuth, anonymous read access, read-only mode, deleting, the visibility of new records (including "always private"), an intake collection, notes for assistants, allowed browser origins and disabled tools.
- Other plugins can add tools with the
mcp_toolsfilter.
