FAQs Omeka Classic plugin

Troubleshooting

Why don't I see New announcement or All announcements?

Only Admins and Super Users send announcements and browse All announcements. Contributors and Researchers see Announcements in the menu as their own inbox. Opening one of the other pages directly shows Omeka's Forbidden page. See the permissions table in Configuration.

Why can't I find the plugin settings?

They are on the Plugins page (Configure next to Announcements), which only Super Users reach. Admins can send, recall and run the cleanup, but not change the settings.

Why didn't someone receive an announcement?

Recipients are worked out when the announcement is sent. A person does not receive it if:

  • their account was inactive when it was sent;
  • they joined, or were given a targeted role, after it was sent;
  • it was sent to roles that don't include theirs and they weren't picked by name;
  • their role is not one of Omeka's admin roles (Super, Admin, Contributor, Researcher), such as a Guest User account.

Open the announcement to see everyone who received it. To reach someone who missed it, send it again to that person.

Why are announcement emails not arriving?

  • Also send email copies must have been ticked when the announcement was sent; the Emails line on its page says how many were sent.
  • The recipient may have turned announcement emails off at the bottom of their inbox.
  • Emails go out from a background job. If Emails stays at Sending…, Omeka's background jobs are not running: check background.php.path in application/config/config.ini and Omeka's error log.
  • The site needs an Administrator Email under Settings > General: it is the sender. Without one, nothing is sent and the error log says so.
  • Omeka Classic needs a working mail setup (mail.transport in config.ini). If other Omeka emails (such as password resets) don't arrive either, fix that first.
  • A recalled announcement sends no emails if it was recalled before the job ran.

Why is the bell missing, or not next to my name?

The bell is printed at the top of every admin page for signed-in users with an admin role, and a few lines of script move it next to your name (beside the menu button on a phone). If the script does not run, the bell stays at the right of the header, beside the menus, and still opens your inbox. If it is missing altogether, check that the plugin is active on the Plugins page, and that the admin theme is Omeka's own (another admin theme may not print the header hook the bell uses).

Why are expired announcements still in inboxes?

Expiry alone does not change inboxes. Either set Clean up after (days) above 0 for the automatic cleanup, or click Run cleanup on All announcements. The automatic cleanup runs at most once an hour, so a newly due announcement can take up to an hour to be cleaned up. See Recall, Expiry and Cleanup.

Why does it say "The expiry date is in the past"?

Expiry dates are read in the site's time zone (PHP's, named beside the Expires field), not your computer's. If the two differ, a time that is still ahead for you may already have passed in the site's time zone. Enter the time as it is in the site's zone, or choose a later one.

Why was my attachment refused?

Only documents, spreadsheets, slides, text, images and ZIP archives can be attached (the form lists the extensions), and a file must really be of the kind its extension says. Web pages, SVG images, scripts and programs are refused, because a browser could run them from your site's address. The form also says the largest file your server accepts; ask your host to raise upload_max_filesize and post_max_size for larger ones. After any error on the form, choose the attachment again: browsers do not keep a chosen file.

Why did some formatting disappear when I sent an announcement?

The message is cleaned of anything that could run code or change the admin for its readers: scripts, on… event attributes, frames, forms and the like. Beyond that, it keeps the elements and attributes your site allows under Settings > Security, as for items and simple pages. To allow more formatting, add it there.

Can I edit an announcement after sending it?

No. Recall it and send a corrected one. Recipients see the first one marked as recalled.

Why did I get "The form expired. Reload the page and try again."?

Every button that changes something carries a security token from your session. You signed out and in again since the page loaded, or your session ended. Reload the page and try again.
