Reference Omeka Classic theme

Accessibility

Conformance target

The theme is designed to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA, which includes the WCAG 2.1 AA level required by the U.S. ADA Title II rule and by EN 301 549. The full statement is in the theme's accessibility.txt.

This covers the theme. Each site should publish its own accessibility statement covering its content, for example as a Simple Page, and link to it from every page with Footer › Accessibility statement page in the theme's settings.

What the theme takes care of

  • Contrast: every text and background pair reaches 4.5:1 (3:1 for borders and focus indicators) in both color schemes, for any colors you choose (in themes that offer Guarantee readable contrast, unless you turn it off). Colored panels in page text get matching text colors; banners with a picture lay a dark scrim under their words.
  • Keyboard: everything works from the keyboard, with a skip link, a visible two-tone focus ring, and menus, the image viewer and the phone menu that hold and return focus correctly.
  • Structure: landmarks, one main heading per page, headings in order, labelled forms and buttons, breadcrumbs, and the current page marked in menus for screen readers.
  • Links: links in text are always underlined.
  • Motion: the theme sets nothing in motion on its own; animations and smooth scrolling stop when a visitor's device asks for reduced motion.
  • Windows high contrast mode: supported (forced colors).
  • Reflow and zoom: pages work at 320 pixels wide and with text enlarged to 200%.
  • Consistent help: contact, accessibility and privacy links appear in the same place on every page.
  • Languages: the page language and text direction follow the language Omeka is set to.
  • Plugins: the pages and forms of supported plugins (Commenting, Contribution, Guest User, Geolocation, Shortcode Carousel and others) get the same care: see Plugin integrations.

What editors need to do

The theme cannot fix content. Editors remain responsible for:

  • text alternatives for images: each image file's Alt Text (on the file's edit page; or choose an element under Appearance › Settings › File Alt Text Element, such as Description), else the theme uses the file's Description or Title; and alt text for pictures in page text, banners and partner logos (each logo's name setting), or marking them decorative;
  • meaningful link text ("Read the 1912 report", not "click here");
  • captions and transcripts for audio and video;
  • headings in order in Simple Pages and exhibit text;
  • keeping Exhibit Builder's carousel still (its Auto slide duration at 0), since it has no pause button;
  • a contrast check if they turn Guarantee readable contrast off.
