Getting Started Omeka Classic theme

First Steps

A new site already looks like a two-ink zine with the Pink & Blue preset. These steps make it yours. All of them are on the theme's settings page (Appearance › Themes › Configure Theme), or in Customize if Design Studio is installed. Click Save Changes at the end.

1. Choose a preset

Under Style preset, pick Pink & Blue, Red & Teal, Sunflower & Federal Blue, Orange & Purple or Photocopy. A preset sets the inks, paper, fonts, header layout and paste-up together. Settings left at "Use preset" follow it, so you can try each one and keep your own choices. See Presets, ink and paper.

2. Set the ink and paper

Under Ink & paper, choose how far the first ink slips (misregistration), how cards and pictures are pasted down, which pictures print in two inks, the paper, and the font of labels and small print. Sunflower & Federal Blue turns the effects down for a calmer newsletter.

3. Give items a Type

Each card carries a sticker saying what the item is, and the same word sits above an item's title. Overprint reads it from the item's Dublin Core Type, such as "Flyer", "Zine", "Cassette" or "Photograph", and falls back to the item's item type where it has none. See Browse and item pages.

4. Add your logo, masthead and site icon

Under Header, upload a Logo (PNG, JPG or GIF, up to 1 MB), or leave it empty and Overprint sets the site's title as a masthead. Add a Tagline for the small line under it. The same section has the header's layout and color, search and an optional button: see Header, announcement bar and footer. Under Site icon & sharing, upload a Site icon for browser tabs and phone home screens, and a Default sharing image for link previews. See Site icon and sharing.

5. Fill in the announcement bar and footer

The Announcement bar is the strip across the top of every page: an issue line, opening hours, a call for donations. In Footer, add where to find you, how to lend or donate, social media links, and your contact, accessibility and privacy pages.

6. Build your home page

Under Home page, upload a Banner image and write a big Banner heading, a sentence and a button: the words sit on the paper, the picture is taped beside them. In the Welcome text, paste a panel of link cards in the first ink, a pull quote from someone who was there, and a call to action (click the editor's Source code button to paste HTML):

<div class="section-accent section-contained">
  <h2>Open a box</h2>
  <div class="v-toc-cards">
    <ul>
      <li><a href="/flyers">Flyers</a></li>
      <li><a href="/zines">Zines</a></li>
      <li><a href="/tapes">Tapes</a></li>
    </ul>
  </div>
</div>

Then choose how many featured exhibits and items to show. See Home page and Simple Pages and content classes.

7. Check the result

Visit your home page, a browse page, an item page and an exhibit, on a phone too, and switch between light and dark with the button in the header (when your Dark mode setting offers it). With Design Studio, you can check all of them in its preview before publishing.
