FAQs Omeka Classic theme

Troubleshooting

Why don't the colors look exactly like the ones I chose?

Overprint darkens or lightens a color wherever text in that color, or on that color, would be hard to read, keeping its hue. The inks on their own (shadows, tape, stickers, pictures) keep your colors as chosen.

Why are my pictures blue (or teal, or purple)?

Ink & paper › Pictures printed in two inks prints banners, and cards if you choose, in the second ink. Set it to None for original colors everywhere. Item pages always show the original picture, and cards show it when a visitor points at them or tabs to them.

Why does a card say "Still Image" instead of "Flyer"?

The sticker is the item's Dublin Core Type. Items without one show their item type instead. Add a Type to each item, or choose Browse pages › Line under the card title › Item type and date to use item types everywhere.

Can I straighten everything?

Yes: Ink & paper › Paste-up › Tidy straightens cards, pictures and labels and removes the tape, and Misregistration › None lines the inks up. Sunflower & Federal Blue does both.

My site's name is too big, or too small.

In the masthead layout, the name is sized by its length: short names are set big, long ones smaller. For a smaller name throughout, choose the Bar or Nameplate layout, or upload a logo (with Logo size).

The menu takes two rows.

Stamped labels take room. In the bar layout, five or more labels move to a row of their own below the name. Shorten the labels in Appearance › Navigation, use Menu levels to keep submenus out of the header, or choose the masthead layout, which always gives the menu its own row.

A band's page doesn't list its flyers and tapes.

Turn on A person's works under Item pages, give the band's item the item type Person, and check that each flyer or tape has the band's name as its Creator, written exactly as the band's title. Items about the band rather than by it are better linked with a Subject: the Filed under stickers link to everything filed under it. See Browse and item pages.

My logo, banner or icon won't upload.

The Configure Theme page accepts PNG, JPG and GIF files up to 1 MB: SVG files and larger images are refused, with a message beside the field. Save a smaller PNG or JPG. For a large banner picture, add it to an item and use Home page › Banner image from an item. If even small files fail, your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize) may be lower than 1 MB: ask your host.

My logo disappears in dark mode.

Add a light version of the logo under Dark mode › Logo for dark mode.

A Simple Page lost its content classes when I saved it.

Two things in Omeka rewrite HTML when you save. On a Simple Page with Use HTML editor? ticked, the editor can drop or rearrange the markup a content class needs: untick it for pages built with content classes and edit the HTML directly. And Omeka's HTML filter (Settings › Security) removes elements and attributes that are not on its allowed lists, including the images and figures pasted prints need. See Simple Pages and content classes.

My settings don't apply to an exhibit.

The exhibit has a theme of its own: on its edit page, Exhibit Builder's Theme is set to a theme rather than Current Public Theme, and its settings replace the site's on its pages. Change them there with Configure, or choose Current Public Theme. See Exhibits.

I changed settings in Design Studio, but visitors don't see them.

Design Studio keeps your changes as a draft that only you see until you click Publish.

The site still looks the same after I changed something.

Settings take effect as soon as you click Save Changes. If you still see the old design, your browser, a caching plugin, a proxy or a CDN may be showing a stored copy: reload the page while holding Shift, or clear that cache.

The site loads a script from code.jquery.com.

Omeka Classic itself loads jQuery from code.jquery.com on every public page, whatever the theme. To serve Omeka's own copy instead, set theme.useInternalAssets = true in application/config/config.ini. Overprint adds no other outside requests, unless you choose a font from an outside service.

Where do I choose what appears on item pages?

Under Item pages in the theme's settings. See Browse and item pages and Item and file pages.

Why is my link preview on social media missing an image?

Upload a Default sharing image under Site icon & sharing. Social networks keep previews for a while; their sharing debuggers can refresh them.

How do I show the site in my language?

See Languages and translation.

A plugin's page doesn't match the theme.

Many plugins have templates or styles in the theme: see Plugin integrations. Every other plugin's pages inherit Overprint's text, forms and buttons. If something looks out of place, adjust it under Advanced › Custom CSS using the design tokens, and tell RefBytes which plugin and page it is.
