Getting Started Omeka Classic theme

First Steps

A new site already looks like a gallery with the White Cube preset. These steps make it yours. All of them are on the theme's settings page (Appearance › Themes › Configure Theme), or in Customize if Design Studio is installed. Click Save Changes at the end.

1. Choose a preset

Under Style preset, pick White Cube, Salon, Kunsthalle, Atelier or Darkroom. A preset sets the colors, fonts, header layout, grid and hanging together. Settings left at "Use preset" follow it, so you can try each one and keep your own choices. See Presets, artworks and colors.

2. Choose how works are shown

Under Artworks, choose how works are hung (a shadow, a mat, a frame, or flat), how grids arrange them, and the caption under each work. Plinth shows the artist and date by default.

3. Describe works so their labels fill in

The wall label beside each work reads Dublin Core elements: Creator, Title, Date, Medium, Extent (dimensions), Provenance (the credit line), Identifier (the accession number) and Abstract or Description (the label text). Medium, Extent, Provenance and Abstract come with the Dublin Core Extended plugin. Give each artist an item of their own, of the item type Person, with their name as its Title and their dates as its Date: every work whose Creator is that name then links to the artist and shows their dates. See Item pages and wall labels.

4. Add your logo and site icon

Under Header, upload a Logo (PNG, JPG or GIF, up to 1 MB). Without one, Plinth shows the site's title in the heading font. The same section has the header's layout and color, search and an optional button: see Header, announcement bar and footer. Under Site icon & sharing, upload a Site icon for browser tabs and phone home screens, and a Default sharing image for link previews. See Site icon and sharing.

5. Fill in the announcement bar and footer

Add a short notice to the Announcement bar if you have one, such as opening hours or a new exhibition. In Footer, add your address and hours, admission, social media links, and your contact, accessibility and privacy pages.

6. Build your home page

Under Home page, upload a Banner image of your current exhibition, with its title as the Banner heading, its dates as the Banner text, and a button to it: the words sit on a label in the corner of the picture. Write a line of Welcome text, such as a pull quote from an artist, and choose how many featured or recent works to show. See Home page.

7. Check the result

Visit your home page, a browse page, a work's page and an artist's page, and an exhibit, on a phone too, and switch between light and dark with the button in the header (when your Dark mode setting offers it). With Design Studio, you can check all of them in its preview before publishing.
