Building Pages Omeka Classic theme

Search

Site search

The search in the header is Omeka's site search: it looks through the records you choose under Settings › Search, and shows the results as the theme's cards (items, files, collections and exhibits, with their pictures) or, for Simple Pages and exhibit pages, as titled rows that say what each one is.

Under Settings › Search:

  • Search Record Types chooses what the search covers: items, files, collections, and, with their plugins, Simple Pages, exhibits and exhibit pages.
  • Search Query Type chooses how the words are matched: keyword (full text), boolean, or exact match.
  • After turning on a record type, click Index Records so the records already on your site are found too.

The header's Search setting shows a search field (the default), a search button that opens the field, or no search. On phones, a search button opens the field.

Advanced search

Browse pages of items link to Omeka's advanced search (Advanced search, /items/search): by words in any element, collection, item type, tags, featured items and more. Plugins add their own fields, such as Geolocation's search by place. The form uses the theme's fields and buttons.

Browsing

Browse pages for items, collections and exhibits show cards in a grid or a list (see the theme's Browse pages settings). Items and collections have a menu to sort them, and the filters of a search are listed above the results. Browsing one collection's items heads the page with the collection's name.

Tags have a page of their own (Browse by tag, /items/tags), with the most used tags larger.

Search boxes in pages

To put a search field in a page or in the home page's welcome text, use BlockSuite's [bs_search] shortcode, or its Search Box layout in an exhibit: it searches the site, or the items of one collection, and suggests titles as visitors type.
