FAQs Omeka Classic theme

Troubleshooting

Why don't my brand colors look exactly like the ones I entered?

With Colors › Guarantee readable contrast on, Vitrine darkens or lightens a color wherever text in that color, or on that color, would be hard to read, keeping its hue. You can turn the guarantee off, but then check contrast yourself.

My logo, banner or icon won't upload.

The Configure Theme page accepts PNG, JPG and GIF files up to 1 MB: SVG files and larger images are refused, with a message beside the field. Save a smaller PNG or JPG (a logo at twice its displayed size is usually well under 1 MB). For a large banner picture, add it to an item and use Home page › Banner image from an item. If even small files fail, your server's PHP upload limit (upload_max_filesize) may be lower than 1 MB: ask your host.

Why does my logo look blurry?

Use a PNG at least twice as large as it appears (for the Large logo size, about 160 pixels tall).

Why does my home page banner look blurry?

A banner taken from an item uses Omeka's full-size copy of its image, at most 800 pixels wide by default. Raise Fullsize Image Size under Appearance › Settings (to 1600 or 2000) and add the image to the item again, or upload a banner image of at least 1600 pixels wide under Home page › Banner image.

My logo disappears in dark mode.

Add a light version of the logo under Dark mode › Logo for dark mode.

A Simple Page lost its content classes when I saved it.

Two things in Omeka rewrite HTML when you save. On a Simple Page with Use HTML editor? ticked, the editor can drop or rearrange the markup a content class needs: untick it for pages built with content classes and edit the HTML directly. And Omeka's HTML filter (Settings › Security) removes elements and attributes that are not on its allowed lists. See Simple Pages and content classes.

Pictures disappear from my page text when I save.

Omeka's HTML filter does not allow img by default. Add img, figure, figcaption to Settings › Security › Allowed HTML Elements and img.src, img.alt to Allowed HTML Attributes, or show pictures with the [file id=12 size=fullsize] shortcode, which the filter leaves alone.

The home page shows no featured items, collections or exhibits.

Only records marked Featured and Public appear: tick both on the item's, collection's or exhibit's edit page. Featured exhibits need the Exhibit Builder plugin, and the number to show under Home page must not be Hide.

An item page has no previous and next links.

They step through the item's collection, so an item needs a collection with at least one other public item. Check that Item pages › Previous and next links is on.

My settings don't apply to an exhibit.

The exhibit has a theme of its own: on its edit page, Exhibit Builder's Theme is set to a theme rather than Current Public Theme, and its settings (the Configure button) replace the site's on its pages. Change them there, or choose Current Public Theme. See Exhibits.

I changed settings in Design Studio, but visitors don't see them.

Design Studio keeps your changes as a draft that only you see until you click Publish.

The site still looks the same after I changed something.

Settings take effect as soon as you click Save Changes, and a new version of the theme loads its stylesheets under new addresses. If you still see the old design, your browser, a caching plugin, a proxy or a CDN in front of the site may be showing a stored copy: reload the page while holding Shift, or clear that cache.

The site loads a script from code.jquery.com.

Omeka Classic itself loads jQuery from code.jquery.com on every public page, whatever the theme. To serve Omeka's own copy instead, set theme.useInternalAssets = true in application/config/config.ini. Vitrine adds no other outside requests, unless you choose a font from an outside service.

Where do I choose what appears on item pages?

Under Item pages in the theme's settings. See Browse and item pages and Item and file pages.

Why is my link preview on social media missing an image?

Upload a Default sharing image under Site icon & sharing. Social networks keep previews for a while; their sharing debuggers can refresh them.

Can I use my organization's own font?

Yes: under Typography, enter the address of the stylesheet that loads it (Adobe Fonts, Google Fonts, or a CSS file on your own server) and the font's name for headings, text or both. See Typography and layout.

My custom font doesn't show.

Check that the font name matches the name in the stylesheet exactly (Adobe Fonts lists it in the web project), that the stylesheet address opens in a browser, and, for Adobe Fonts, that your site's domain is added to the web project. The page uses the fallback style chosen above until the font loads.

How do I show the site in my language?

See Languages and translation.

A plugin's page doesn't match the theme.

Many plugins have templates or styles in the theme: see Plugin integrations. Every other plugin's pages inherit Vitrine's text, forms and buttons. If something looks out of place, adjust it under Advanced › Custom CSS using the design tokens, and tell RefBytes which plugin and page it is.
