Blog Omeka Classic plugin

Releases

1.0.1

Oct 27, 2026

  • Shared links to a post show its excerpt (or the start of its text) and are marked as an article; the blog home, categories and author pages show their own description. Search engines get the same description. This needs a theme built on Theme Engine 0.1.2 or later (Plinth, Vitrine, Confetti and Overprint 0.1.2); before, every blog page shared the site's description.
  • With OG Images 1.0.1, posts get their own sharing card, from its new Blog posts template.

1.0.0

Oct 27, 2026

First version for Omeka Classic, the counterpart of the Blog 1.4 module for Omeka S.

  • Posts with a title, an address (slug), an excerpt, a text written in Omeka's editor (TinyMCE, with images, quotations, tables and code samples), a category and tags. Post HTML goes through Omeka's HTML Purifier with the site's allowed elements, plus images, code and rules.
  • Featured images from the collection: an image picker on the post form searches items with images; or an image address. A file of a private item shows only to signed-in users.
  • Editorial workflow on Omeka Classic's roles: Contributors write their own posts and send them for review (a post they save as published goes to review); Admins and Super Users publish, schedule, edit and delete any post; Researchers may preview unpublished posts. Moderators chosen in the settings are emailed, from a background job, when a post is sent for review.
  • Scheduled publishing: a published post with a future date stays hidden until then, everywhere. No cron job; Omeka's site search and the blog_post_published hook catch up on the first request after the time.
  • Preview of unpublished posts in the site's layout, at /blog/<slug>/preview.
  • Comments from visitors, held for moderation, with a honeypot field, a signed form token (too fast or expired forms are refused), a limit per visitor per hour, dropped repeats, and too many links sent to Spam. Moderators are emailed about each pending comment. Blog › Comments approves, marks as spam or deletes, one at a time or several.
  • Public pages: the blog home at /blog with categories, tags and feeds beside the posts; post pages with the featured image, an image lightbox, "About the author", more posts by the author and comments; category, tag and author archives; pagination with the theme's own controls. Styled with the Theme Engine's tokens, so they follow Plinth, Vitrine, Confetti and Overprint (light and dark), and work in other themes. Themes override the templates in themes/<theme>/blog/.
  • RSS 2.0 and Atom feeds of the 20 latest posts, with discovery links on every page, and an XML sitemap at /blog/sitemap.xml.
  • schema.org JSON-LD: BlogPosting on posts, Blog on the blog home. On Theme Engine themes the post page gets its canonical address, and its featured image as the sharing image (unless OG Images draws one).
  • Navigation: a link to the blog in the site's main navigation (Appearance › Navigation hides or moves it).
  • Author profiles: a bio and a picture on each user's form, shown under their posts.
  • [blog_posts] shortcode for Simple Pages, and a Blog Posts block for Exhibit Builder, replacing the Omeka S Blog Posts page block: latest posts, from one category or tag, as a list, a grid or a compact list.
  • Admin: Blog in the admin menu, with Posts (status filters with counts, search, category filter), Comments, Categories, Tags (rename, delete, clear unused) and Settings; a dashboard panel and figure.
  • REST API: blog_posts, blog_categories, blog_tags and blog_comments through Omeka Classic's API, with API keys and the same rules as the admin; described for API Browser.
  • Site search: posts are a search record type (Blog Post).
  • Tools for AI assistants when the MCP Server plugin is active: blog_info, blog_search_posts, blog_get_post, blog_create_post, blog_update_post.
  • Audit Trail: posts, categories, tags, comment moderation and settings are logged when the Audit Trail plugin is installed.

Not in this version: multi-site visibility (Omeka Classic has one public site), sample posts on install (one category, News, is made instead), and syntax highlighting of code samples.
