Footnotes attach a note, a link or a related item or file of your site to particular words of the transcript, in the manner of OHMS.
Adding a footnote
- On the review screen, select the words the footnote belongs to.
- Click Note in the paragraph's tools.
- Write a note, give a link, or search for an item or file by title and pick it. At least one of them is needed.
- Untick Show on the public transcript for a footnote meant for staff only.
- Click Save footnote.
The anchor is kept as a marker in the paragraph text, so it travels with the words through edits, merges and splits. Splitting a paragraph through a footnote is refused. Deleting a footnote leaves its words in place, unmarked.
Numbering
Footnote numbers are never managed by hand: they follow reading order when the transcript is shown, so footnotes can be added in any order and stay numbered correctly after edits.
On the public page
- The marked words carry a superscript number.
- Hovering the words, or reaching them with the keyboard, opens a popup with the note, the linked record's thumbnail and title, or the link's site.
- A References list after the transcript collects the public footnotes.
- Linked items and files are loaded as the visitor would see them: a private item, or a file of a private item, is never shown to visitors who may not see it. A footnote with nothing else to show then reads as plain text, without a number.
Where footnotes never go
The markers are left out of the site search text, the downloaded transcript, citations and the segment search text.
