The new layouts do not appear in the page editor
Check that Block Suite is installed and active under Plugins, and that Exhibit Builder is active. The layouts follow Exhibit Builder's five under New Block; scroll the layout list.
A block shows nothing on the public site
Blocks with nothing to show print nothing, rather than an empty box: a Hero with no item, heading or text; a Callout, Lead or Pull Quote with no text; a Call to Action with no heading, text or button; Statistics with no figure; Item Cards, Spotlight, Item Slider or Logo Wall whose items are private or have been deleted (a Logo Wall also needs images). Tabs, Accordion and a text Timeline need headings in their text: without them the text is shown as plain text.
The Tabs or Accordion block shows everything as one text
The sections start at headings made with the editor's format menu (Heading 2, Heading 3), not at bold paragraphs. If the text mixes levels, set Start a tab at (or Start a section at) to the level you used for the titles.
A Timeline shows dates as typed
Only machine dates are rewritten: 1938, 1952-12, 1963-12-14 and ranges such as 1949-01-07/1949-01-14. Others ("Winter 1963") are kept as you wrote them. To add a title, put it after a vertical bar or a dash with spaces around it: 1938 | Opening day.
A button does not appear
A button needs both a label and a link, except in the Hero, where a label alone links to the item. Links starting with javascript: or data: are dropped. Write site links as paths without a leading slash (items/browse?tags=Posters), which work when Omeka is installed in a subfolder.
Markup disappears when I save a page
With Settings › Security › Enable HTML Filtering on, Omeka filters what you save. Check that:
- Keep page markup when Omeka filters HTML is on under Plugins › BlockSuite › Configure. Without it, Omeka's filter removes HTML5 elements (
<figure>,<figcaption>,<nav>,<section>,<time>…) and attributes such asaria-label, whatever its allowed lists say. - The element and attribute are on Allowed HTML Elements and Allowed HTML Attributes under Settings › Security. Turning the option on adds the ones it supports; an
idattribute, for example, needs*.idadded by hand. - The page was saved again after the change: markup removed earlier is not restored, so paste it again.
- On a Simple Page, Use HTML editor? is unticked for hand-written markup: the rich-text editor can rewrite it on its own.
If Omeka shows warnings such as Element 'section' is not supported, the elements are on the allowed lists but the option is off: turn it on, or remove them from the lists.
A shortcode is printed as text
Check the spelling ([bs_items], not [bs-items]), that attribute values are in double quotes, and that the text is one where Omeka runs shortcodes: Simple Pages, exhibit text blocks, and the home page welcome text of themes that pass it through shortcodes (RefBytes themes do). Item and collection descriptions do not run shortcodes.
A shortcode block looks unstyled
Shortcodes in Simple Pages and the home page load their stylesheets in the head; elsewhere each block prints its stylesheet link just before itself. A caching or minifying plugin that strips <link> elements from the page body would remove them; add blocksuite.css and the layout's layout.css to the theme instead.
The slider does not move by itself
The slide show stops when keyboard focus enters the slider, pauses while the pointer is over it and never starts for visitors whose system asks for reduced motion. Press Start automatic slide show to start it again.
The ornament divider is invisible
The ornament is drawn by the theme (.v-divider--ornament). Themes that do not style it show empty space; choose the Line style instead, or add a rule to the theme.
Exhibit Builder's carousel stopped working
Block Suite does not use jCarousel and its markup has no .jcarousel classes, so it cannot affect Exhibit Builder's Carousel layout or the Shortcode Carousel plugin. Check the browser console for errors from other scripts.
The blocks look different under another theme
That is by design: blocks use the theme's own components and tokens. Under themes that are not built on the RefBytes Theme Engine they get Block Suite's plain fallback style, which the theme's own CSS can refine (see Theming and Markup).
